Following the official introduction in India, Facebook has finally rolled out its TikTok-like feature, Instagram Reels in the United States and other 50 other countries on Wednesday.
The roll-out was made following Microsoft interest in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. operations from ByteDance after the White House had threatened to ban the app alongside other Chinese-owned apps stating security concerns.
Reels was reportedly tested earlier in Brazil, France and Germany. However, it was officially rolled out in India in the previous month after the Indian government placed a ban on TikTok and several other Chinese apps following a border clash with China.

Ever since, Facebook and TikTok have been in loggerheads, since both see each other as a threat.
Kevin Maye, TikTok Chief Executive has called Reels a “copycat product” following the product mimicking. However, Vishal Shah, Instagram’s vice president of product, stated that inspiration for products comes from everywhere including Facebook’s teams and the ecosystem more broadly.
Facebook was also quized last week at a congressional hearing on U.S. tech companies’ over alleged abuse of power by spying on competitors following a suggestion that the big tech company has copied the likes of Snapchat in recent years.
Reels is designed to work in a very similar way to TikTok. It allows users to capture short videos, and make edits by adding special effects and sound just like TikTok.

Reels was embedded in Instagram and not a standalone app. This will allow Instagram users to create TikTok-like videos easily within the app.
