On Monday this week, the Federal Government of Nigeria issued a directive compelling all network operators in the country to disconnect all mobile lines that are not linked to the National Identification Number (NIN).
After that, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy with key stakeholders in the Communications industry had an urgent meeting to elaborate further on the directive.
The stakeholders unanimously agreed during this meeting that it is necessary for the government to take a bold step to improve the integrity and transparency of the SIM registration process while the previous year’s SIM registration process was audited.
However, certain decisions were considered for immediate implementation by all Network Operators and this include the following.

Resolutions:
It was affirmed that NEW SIMs registration should be totally suspended by all network operators. Besides, operators must require network subscribers to update their SIM registration records whereas the need to provide a valid National Identification Number (NIN) is compulsory.
In addition, the SIM registration data re-capturing exercise for all network subscribers will take place within two weeks starting from 16th – 30th December 2020. It is also stated that subscribers that could not make up with the deadline date be blocked by their network provider.

The attendees of this meeting are the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Management of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and Management staff of all network service providers.
