In simple words, you do not have to open the message to let your friends know that you have read their messages. You can simply tick mark the Mark as read button in the notification and it will show your message as read on the sender’s side. Say your read receipt (blue ticks) is activated, in this case, your friend will see the blue ticks indicating that the message has been read.
Note that the feature is available only in the beta version now. Also, only Android beta users can avail of this feature for now. The stable version is expected soon. To become a beta user, subscribe to the WhatsApp beta programme.
The new Mark as Read will appear as an option in the notification panel when you receive any message. Simply tap the Mark as read option and your friend will see their sent messages as read. Once you mark a message as read it will disappear from the notification panel. However, you can still reply to messages from the notification.
