How to Disable Data for Specific Apps on Windows

  1. Open your PC, and go to Control Panel >> System and Security >> Windows Defender Firewall.
  2. Next, click Advanced settings to see the advanced firewall settings and select Outbound Rules on the left.
  3. Now, click New Rule from your right and select Program when asked what kind of rule you want to create. Click Next at the bottom of the window.
  4. On the next screen, select This program path and click Browse. Find the app that you want to disable the internet.
  5. Once you find the app’s EXE file, click the address bar in File Explorer and press Ctrl + C on your keyboard to copy the folder path. Please don’t select the EXE file yet. Now, go back to the firewall panel and paste the copied path in This program path.
  6. Enter the name of the EXE file (Ctrl + V) and click Next.
  7. Now, choose Block the connection and click Next.
  8. Ensure you tick all the options and click Next to disable the network on the app.
  9. Lastly, you can enter a name for your rule, add a description and click Finish.

The app will be denied internet access henceforth.

To re-enable the internet for the app, go back to Outbound Rules in Windows Defender advance settings to find the rule created. You should then select and click Disable Rule and the app will start to connect to the internet again. You can also delete the rule if you won’t be needing it anymore.

How to Disable Data for Specific Apps on Mac

You can only block incoming connections for an app using the built-in macOS firewall. Follow the steps below to do that:

  1. On your Mac, click the Apple logo in the top-left and select System Preferences.
  2. Next go to Security & Privacy >> Firewall >> Firewall Options and click the Add (+) button.
  3. Add the app and select Block incoming connections from the next menu.
  4. Click OK to save.
