It is beyond doubt that iPhones are one of the smart devices in the world that you can purchase today. Despite the efficiency of these devices, they are prone to faults, and one of the possible faults that your iPhone can develop is not turning on due to software or hardware related issues. Here, we have considered 5 ways to restart your iPhone if your device won’t turn on.
There are many possible reasons why your iPhone won’t turn on. These include software crashes, faulty charging cable, drained battery, etc., to mention but a few. In this post, I will be discussing some of the possible issues your iPhone might be facing and possible solutions on how to fix them.

Common Apple Startup Issues
In this subsection, I have enlisted some possible issues that you might be facing concerning your iPhone not turning on. If you encounter any of the enlisted problems, there is no need to worry, as I will be giving you tips on tackling these issues later in this article. Let’s take a look at these issues:
Reboot stuck on Apple Logo, iPhone won’t turn on after iOS update, iPhone won’t turn on after jailbreak, iPhone won’t restart, iPhone stuck in a boot loop, iPhone blue screen, iPhone won’t turn on past Apple Logo, Flashing Apple Logo and White screen of death
If you find your iPhone facing any of these issues listed above, then you are in the right place. I would teach you how to handle most of these issues at home without visiting an Apple store.
Tips on how to restart an iPhone that won’t turn on
As I have mentioned above, this subsection would emphasize possible advice on how to solve your “why does my iPhone won’t turn on” issues, thereby saving you some stress of going over to some nearby Apple store to get your iPhone fixed.
Connect your charger and wait for the response
There are many reasons behind an unresponsive iPhone. One of the most common is as a result of a completely drained battery. If perhaps, due to one reason or the other, you have not used your iPhone for quite some extended period, there is a high possibility that the phone does not have enough power to turn on. Here is a possible solution to that:
- Plug your iPhone on charging.
- Make sure you are using the original Apple lightning cable.
- Wait for a few minutes, and you will see the screen displaying an almost empty battery.
- If, after waiting for some minutes, the screen appears with the display mentioned above, then your iPhone will turn on automatically the moment it has been charged to some certain level.
- If the screen doesn’t show the display mentioned above after waiting for some minutes, then I think you should move on to the next tip, where I would proffer another solution.
Hard Reset
If your phone doesn’t turn on the display I mentioned in the previous tip, then your iPhone might be facing software related issues, and a possible solution would be to proceed with the process of” Hard Reset”.
Now you might start wondering whether doing the “Hard Reset” might wipe your user data. Please don’t get confused; Hard Reset does not wipe your user data. Hard reset does in the iPhone because it clears the RAM and terminates some irrelevant processes but does not meddle with the user data.
If you are wondering how to reset your iPhone hard, then do well to follow the steps given below:
iPhone 6s and older models
If the model of your iPhone falls in the range given above, then you can do the hard reset by following the procedure below:
- Press the home button and volume down button at the same time for 20 to 30 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
And that’s it!!! Your iPhone would be rebooted automatically, and you would have your iPhone functioning well as before.
iPhone 7 and other models released upwards
If you use the iPhone 7 and other models released after it, here is a tip to hard reset your device.
- Press the power button and volume down at the same time until the Apple logo appears.
After the Apple logo must have appeared, your iPhone will start usually, and all you need to do is start using your mobile again as before.
If the problem persists after trying all the tips mentioned above, then move on to the following information on another possible solution.
Changing of Lightning Cable and Adapter
If the previous trick did not work for your mobile, I suggest you try changing the lightning cable or adapter with which you charge your mobile. There might be a possibility that the cable is not in good working condition, or probably it has stopped working, thereby preventing your iPhone from getting charged. You can try your cable or adapter with another iOS device, or better still, walk up to the nearest Apple store around you and get another one.
Restore with iTunes
Not all iPhone users have the issue of “iPhone not turning on”, but some users have the problem that their iPhone is stuck on boot or having the red or blue screen error appearing on startup. If your iPhone seems to have this kind of problem, you need to install iOS on your iPhone with the help of iTunes.
To install iOS on your iPhone with the help of iTunes, follow the instructions below:
- Connect your iPhone to a computer that has the latest version of iTunes installed on it.
- If the model of your iPhone is of iPhone 8 and above – Press and quickly release the volume up and volume down button one after the other in quick succession. Then, press and hold the side button until you see the recovery mode appears on the screen.
- If you are using iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, press the power and volume down buttons at the same time until you see iTunes recovery mode.
- However, if you own an iPhone 6s or any other models released before it, then you need to keep pressing the home and power buttons together until you enter the recovery mode.
- Once you are in recovery mode, click on “Update” when prompted by iTunes. This process will then reinstall the iOS on your iPhone, and your phone will boot up normally.
However, be informed that your data won’t be lost when updating iOS through iTunes. But if you chose the “Restore” option, the entire data stored on your iPhone would be wiped.
Getting Apple Support
If none of the tips above worked for you, then I think you should get Apple support. You will save yourself some money if your phone is in warranty or if you have an AppleCare plan.
Conclusion
It is evident that no matter how advanced technology might be, our devices are prone to faults, and Apple Products (iPhones) do not make an exception to that. Recently, there was a hike in Apple products’ price, making iPhone’s even more costly than before. Given this steep increase in the cost of the iPhone, it hurts if such a device abruptly stops functioning correctly.
