How to Close an App manually on Mac

First, right-click on a running app's icon from the menu bar and click Quit. Alternatively, you can just press the Command-Q keys.

The app refuses to close, then it is probably frozen. You will need to force it to quit. Here is how to go about it.

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the top-left corner and click Force Quit. Alternatively, you can press Command-Option-Esc. You can also find the Force Quit option in the Apple drop-down menu.
  2. This will show the Force Quit Applications box with a list of currently active apps. Choose the app and click on the Force Quit A confirmation pop-up will show and you need to click on Force Quit to stop the app.

How to Use the Activity Monitor

To use the Activity Monitor to stop all active processes on your Mac, do these;

  1. First, use Spotlight Search to find Activity Monitor or click on Applications in the left-hand menu.
  2. From the list of apps that shows, double-click on Utilities, then on Activity Monitor. The Activity Monitor is found in the Applications' Utility folder.
  3. Inside the Activity Monitor, you will see a list of all active processes including the malfunctioning app.
  4. Find the app in the list and select it.
  5. Next, click the “x” icon from the top of the window and click on Force Quit.

Now, the disturbing app should be closed. If, however, you still experience issues, you may want to consider shutting down and restarting your system. Kindly note that you may end up losing your unsaved work if you make that choice. But it will definitely help you fix your system.

  1. Just hold down the power button or the Touch ID button for Mac with a Touch Bar, until the Apple logo appears on your display.
  2. Release it and leave the system to restart.
